One of the journalists participating in the A4T Phase 2 Investigative Grant and Mentorship programme, Henry Owino, recently published an investigative report, highlighting how corruption was affective effective health service provision at Mbagathi Hospital.
Henry details his months of observation and patients experiences at the facility where crafty medical practitioners use illegal Mpesa payment numbers that they own, demand bribes and/or charge services exorbitantly. Despite the ban on cash payments at the Hospital money does change hands and some patients are issued with dubious receipts. Doctors and other medical officers treating patients retain all receipts to ensure that each receipt is only used once. It also removes the evidence that such a cartel runs the hospital.
